Area Highlights

Park county is considered “the heart of Colorado” as the geographical center of the state lies within the 900 square mile South Park region. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, low humidity, and less than 20,000 residents spread out across nearly 2,200 square miles (over HALF of which is PUBLIC LAND!), you will have plenty of room to escape and take in the great outdoors!

This area is a fishing paradise (trout, pike, salmon…) with four reservoirs fairly close by (Eleven Mile, Spinney, Antero, & Tarryall) as well as the rivers and streams that connect them, including gold medal trout fishing waters!

If hunting is more your style, this area is still hard to beat. With hundreds of thousands of acres of hunting land available between Pike and San Isabel National Forests and numerous state wildlife areas nearby, you’ll have an opportunity to hunt elk, deer, pronghorn, waterfowl, various small game and even potentially black bear. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) does a great job of providing information on all of these areas, including detailed online hunting maps.

There are hundreds of trails in the area to take in all of the beautiful scenery. Whether by foot, by bike, or by horse, you’re sure to find plenty of amazing sights. Would you rather have an engine do the work for you? Try the Wheeler Lake trail if you’re up for a challenge (7 miles long) or if you want something a little bit easier, try the Breakneck Pass trail (10 miles long). Not afraid of extreme adventure and getting a little wet? Then head over to the white water capital of Colorado at Buena Vista. If it’s winter, you can’t beat the skiing available nearby in Breckenridge to the north (Breck Ski Resort) or at Monarch Mountain to the west.

Take a trip out and see all this beautiful area has to offer!
